Fantasy of Flight Challenge
A group of 24 Patchway Community College students from years 8 and 9 have been working with ‘My Future My Choice’ in association with the RWA on a two day off timetable STEM project called ‘Fantasy of Flight’. On day one and supported by business volunteers from Rolls Royce, Airbus, EDF Energy and the National Composites Centre students made and decorated non flying aircraft. These will actually form part of the RWA exhibition on air, over the summer holidays. On day two, students worked in the main hall again with the business volunteers on a practical design and making challenge to build a model glider and then a working plane.
The students learned about the way planes fly. The day culminated in the students having a ‘fly off’ against each other to see how their models performed. It was an amazing experience for the students who were fully engaged throughout the project. Being able to work with engineers, communicating with them and listening to the advice being given was truly inspirational.
We would like to thank all engineers for their support during the two days and hope we can run similarly engaging projects in the future.
